Boating Safety Tips

bulletRadio Communication
Consider getting a VHF radio.  VHFs are:
bulletrelatively inexpensive;
bulletdesigned to withstand the marine environment;
bulleta quick, reliable means of reaching the Coast Guard, marine police, tow companies and other key help organizations;
bulletuseful for weather forecasts and bulletins, as well as general safety information;
bulletindispensable for contacting commercial ships and naval vessels for navigation and security purposes; and
bullethelpful for getting in touch with bridge tenders and marinas.

A cell phone with a list of key numbers is a good backup.  However, cell phone coverage is less dependable than VHF on the water.
